OUR HISTORY

The idea for the Gale Center of History and Cutlure was born nearly three years ago by several long-time citizens of South Jordan. These citizens wanted to create a place to learn about and experience the rich history of South Jordan and devote space to the students and members of the community to spend time. The history and story behind the development of South Jordan is so important to the livelihood of the Wasatch Front, in Utah, that the opportunity to share the stories and history could not be passed up.

The Story of South Jordan is the story of opening a door - a door to new opportunities for many people.

In 1859 the first homsteaders found land in the southern end of the Salt Lake Valley for their crops and animals. Families came here to build a life together in a new place, start traditions and build memories that could be passed down to future generations.

Throughout the years, doors continued to open in South Jordan - on homes, schools, businesses, and community buildings. Growth and learning built hope for the future. The early settlers used the living resources of South Jordan - the fertile ground and the Jordan River - to raise cattle and sheep to feed their families. They started businesses and mined the earth. They built a life with determination and vision.

Today, as we begin the 21st century, our resources still include a rich environment and the enthusiasm of hardworking citizens. As a result, our city now boasts comfortable homes, thriving commercial development, modern manufacturing, varied cultural and academic opportunities, and beautiful open space for recreation. In South Jordan, the door continues to open on a brighter future for the children of the Salt Lake Valley.
